AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY URGES PAULDING RESIDENTS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SERVICES
FUNDED BY LOCAL RELAY FOR LIFE
Every year thousands participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life in Paulding County, and anxiously await the culmination of the events at the Paulding County High School. This year’s event will take place Friday and Saturday, May 13th & 14th. Countless volunteers are currently spending a lot of time fundraising – from asking friends to donate, selling t-shirts, to selling different items and services - all in the name of Relay for Life.
Paulding County residents should be proud in that each year they raise a great deal of money in the fight against cancer– last year over $230,000 was raised. A large portion of those fundraising dollars stay in the community benefitting local cancer patients. One such program is Look Good… Feel Better, a free program that provides beauty kits to cancer patients. The kits include makeup and skincare products, and provide a priceless service in that it helps restore patient appearance and self esteem. The program also allows local cosmetologists, nail techs, aestheticians and other beauty providers with the opportunity to work one-on-one with patients as they teach them beauty tips that are specific for their needs.
Although a great deal of the Relay for Life fundraising money does stay in the county as Paulding cancer patients use the free services, there are dollars that are not being consumed, primarily because patients don’t know the help is there. “It is our goal that every dollar raised at Paulding County’s Relay for Life return to the community,” says Lindsi Pearson, Area Manager for the American Cancer Society. “There is clearly a patient need, and it saddens me to think that there are thousands of dollars left “on the table” because a cancer patient doesn’t know she can call and get assistance with the Look Good…Feel Better program, or any of our other countless free community services.”
While participating in Relay for Life is a vital way to help Paulding County cancer patients, it is equally important for each person to encourage families and friends who can benefit from these free services to ask for help. The American Cancer Society and its’ programs are dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health program and saving lives, as well as diminishing suffering. Together, residents in Paulding County can create a community where there is less cancer and more birthdays.
